The Malta Aviation Museum Foundation, a non-profit making NGO, was set up with the purpose of establishing an Aviation Museum in Malta.
Initially, two ex.RAF Romney Huts at Ta' Qali have been transformed into phase one of the Aviation Museum Complex. The second phase consisted of the building of a brand new hangar to house WWII aircraft, an office building and two public conveniences. This hangar, named "The Air Battle of Malta Memorial Hangar", reminds all visitors of Malta's important role during the crucial years of 1940-43.
The Malta Aviation Museum Foundation is now embarking on the third phase of the museum expansion project which mainly entails the construction of a 150 by 100 feet Bellman type hangar, on the current museum grouds. This hangar which will be the largest at the museum will increase the ‘roofed’ exhibition space by around 1,400 square metres.
The project purpose is to enlarge the display area and significantly improve the overall presentation of the exhibition. Once construction works on the new hangar are completed Malta Aviaition Museum Foundation is planning a complete reorganization of the display set up of our collection (new exhibition setup will be rearranged so that different areas will be dedicated to different epics of aviation history) and more aircraft and exhibits will be displayey in a fully assembled and restored state. Currently the Malta Aviation Museum Foundation holds a number of aircraft exhibits which are stored in a dismantled form due to lack of roofed exhibition space. Such exhibits will be fully assembled and displayed as complete aircraft. The Malta Aviation Museum Complex will thus be able to boast of a Main Exhibition Hangar of international standard thus making the museum a greater attraction.
The project is being developed in an eco friendly manner that minimises use of non-renewable energy resources. The hangar is designed in a manner to make maximum use of direct sun light and a water reservoir is being constructed to hold run off rain water to be used to water soft area landscaping.
A Fund Raising Appeal has been launched to cover part of the cost of purchase and erection of the Main Exhibition Hangar as well as the construction of a rain water reservoir which will not be covered through European Union Funds. Prospective sponsors or donors are gently requested to call our director general, Mr. Ray Polidano on (+356) 21416 095 or send an email on info@maltaaviationmuseum.com to get more information on sponsorship packages and donation schemes being launched to help the museum finance part of the hefty cost of this long term investment.
